# Family musicking [[Musicking]] (Small, 1998) as it happens in a family: the whole range of a family's musical activity, whatever its form, occasion or standard. Koops (2020) sets out a *family musicking framework* for it, crossing two continua. *Parenting musically ~ musical parenting* asks whether an episode serves a parenting goal or a musical one: using music to accomplish something else a parent wants, or acting to support a child's musical development. *Practical ~ relational musicking* asks what the musicking is for: accomplishing a set goal, or deepening a relationship. The second pair is Koops's extension of Small, who did not himself distinguish forms of musicking in this way (Koops, 2020, p. 9).
